ICEA Interview with Jason Theron

Jason Theron, a South African cueist, has lived up to his dreams, and our dreams.

Owner of two BAIC automobiles, Jason rises to fame swiftly in South Africa. Nobody in the cue sport industry had thought about playing this sport can literally change their lives, until Chinese Pool came to the market. An integral part of the Lease2Race business model, Chinese Eight-Ball Super League① (CESL) organized by Joy Billiards from China, awards a car to its monthly winner.

Locals swarm into shopping malls for the competition in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg. Jason Theron was one of them - He took a liking to this game after watching his fellow countrymen playing in China, and wanted to give it a go. He succeeded, immensely - Winner of two cars within the first year of the competition, Jason accomplished mission impossible. Will the miracle run continue? We’ll just wait and see.

We did a quick interview with Jason Theron via Facebook messenger, let’s listen to his story with Chinese pool.

Q1.Hi,Jason. Congratulations, you are now a well-known figure in the pool world! We want to know about your story. How did you know Chinese pool and participated in the car competition?

A: I saw Chinese pool on Youtube and thought I would give it a go, cause it looked very interesting to play. I have a Joy table in my friend’s house, so if you have a table you get spots into the car competition.

Q2. What discipline did you play before?

A: English pool is famous in South Africa, I used to play English pool and a little bit of snooker before Chinese pool. I played English pool for my whole life achieved what I could so needed something new and exciting to play. And Chinese pool is much better. Now I only play Chinese pool and 9 ball now.

Q3. Who is your favourite Chinese pool player?

A: Favourite players, Zheng Yubo and Gareth Potts. This year at the grand finals and last year at the international invitational I've played Yubo already losing both times 13:9 and 13:6.

Q4. Did you know he is a very good Chinese pool player before you play with him? Are you nervous?

A: I definitely knew him because he won the previous year, didn't feel nervous at all, I had nothing to lose, was a honour to play him.

Q5. Who do you want to compete against? Why?

A: I'd like to play Gareth Potts. He is the best international player and probably best in the world because he won so much already, so I'd like to see if I can compete against him.

Q6. Any goals in future Chinese pool tournaments?

A: Few goals, which would be to win more cars in South Africa and to do well in China.

Q7. Do you think Chinese pool influenced your life? How?

A: Definitely influenced my life because I stop playing cue sports for about 8 years then started again because of Chinese pool, and I've travelled a lot to China, think 9 times just for Chinese pool. It's also very beneficial for me because I've won 2 cars so far and could win more this year.
